Overall it was quite good. Once I made contact via e-mail, they responded quite fast and allowed me to access my account with the updated number.

My wife's account was in the same state, but then I realised I could simply register anew with my wife's number. This stranded about USD 2, which I can live with.
So we're "back in business".
The timing was quite bad, as I was hit by a cascading set of dependencies just before I went abroad for two weeks. The country I visited can coerce you to give up your phone without what I would call due process, so I deleted a lot of stuff. I should have got a second phone.

Lesson learned.
Before leaving I deleted the password manager on my 6yo phone.

I tested reinstallation and found Android 11 is too old for the Google Play Store version. Urk!
